How Many People We Can Host
Yorimichiya welcomes groups of all sizes for a 1-hour Kyoto calligraphy experience, from families and small private groups to corporate teams, school trips, and large international travel groups. We can comfortably accommodate up to 20 guests at one time for our dedicated calligraphy sessions.
The minimum group size to secure a private, exclusive booking for your organization is 10 participants.

Our traditional Kyoto machiya features two spacious Japanese-style rooms spread across two levels. This unique architectural layout allows larger groups to be divided into two intimate, highly focused setups of up to 10 guests each—with one group practicing on the first floor and the second group on the second floor.
This multi-level arrangement ensures a relaxed, quiet, and deeply authentic atmosphere, giving every single participant a peaceful environment to connect with the timeless art of Shodo away from the noisy, crowded tourist hubs of the city.
Desks, Tools, and Seating
Because traditional Japanese calligraphy requires dedicated physical materials for each individual, event organizers are naturally concerned about equipment availability.
At Yorimichiya, we completely eliminate this logistical worry. We guarantee that every participant will have their own fully set up, dedicated workspace. We maintain a permanent, on-site inventory of 20 complete sets of premium calligraphy tools, meaning no tools ever need to be shared or passed around during the session.
Each individual workspace is meticulously prepared prior to your arrival with the following high-quality equipment:
Dedicated Calligraphy Desks: Stable, flat surfaces adjusted to the proper height for writing.
Calligraphy Mats (Shitajiki): Specialized thick felt underlays that absorb pressure and keep the paper perfectly in place.
Paper Weights (Bunchin): Heavy traditional metal bars that prevent the delicate paper from shifting or wrinkling.
Calligraphy Brushes (Fude): Professional brushes with fine hairs capable of holding the perfect amount of ink.
Fine Brushes (Kofude): Smaller, specialized brushes used for detailed writing, such as signing names.
Ink Stones (Suzuri): Heavy, traditional stone vessels holding the fluid black ink (sumi).
For seating arrangements, we prioritize the physical comfort and accessibility of your international guests.
While our historic venue features traditional tatami bamboo flooring for an authentic cultural feel, we understand that sitting flat on the floor can be challenging for some travelers. Upon request, we can easily provide low-profile western chairs or supportive cushions for anyone who needs them.

If Your Group Is Larger Than 20
For larger groups exceeding our single-session maximum of 20 participants, we provide two highly efficient, seamless structural solutions to ensure that everyone in your organization can take part without any compromise in quality or personal attention.
Two-Session Sequential Rotation: We can split your large group into two back-to-back, 1-hour sessions (e.g., 20 people in Session A, followed immediately by 20 people in Session B). While one group is participating in the workshop, the other group can explore the beautiful historic neighborhood surrounding our venue.
Simultaneous Calligraphy & Tea Ceremony Rotation: This is our most highly recommended option for corporate groups and large tour packages. We can divide your total group into two equal squads of up to 20 people each. While Group A experiences the 1-hour Kyoto calligraphy experience, Group B enjoys an authentic, traditional Kyoto tea ceremony in our separate tea room. After 60 minutes, the two groups swap activities. This allows up to 40 guests to experience two premium Japanese cultural activities smoothly within a tight, highly optimized 2-hour travel itinerary.

Pre-Event Preparation
Collecting Names via Google Forms
To ensure that your precious 1-hour workshop time on-site is fully spent practicing and creating art, we handle the critical linguistic customization before your group even arrives in Japan.
Once your private booking is officially confirmed, we will send the group organizer a dedicated Google Form link to distribute to all participants.
Information Collected: We collect each participant's full English name and their preferred choice of kanji character theme.
Introduction to Traditional Tools
Participants learn about the "Four Treasures of the Study."
The instructor clearly explains the specific function and cultural significance of the brush (fude), fine brush (kofude), paper weight (bunchin), calligraphy mat (shitajiki), and ink stone (suzuri), teaching guests how to care for these historical tools.

Core Foundational Stroke Practice
The instructor demonstrates the vital physical foundation of Shodo. Guests learn the proper upright seating posture, correct breathing, and how to hold the brush completely vertically to properly control line thickness, fluid transitions, and ink flow.
Participants begin working with real black ink on practice paper. The instructor breaks down the three foundational movements that form all Japanese characters: the clean hook (hane), the elegant sweeping slide (harai), and the firm, sharp stop (tome).
Personalized Kanji Practice Session
Moving on to their chosen individual words, guests begin refining their custom layouts.
Every participant is given 5 sheets of traditional practice paper.
Our main instructor and assistants circulate the rooms continuously, providing hands-on, one-on-one structural adjustments and encouraging guidance to every guest.
The Final Masterpiece Creation
Once full confidence is achieved, participants transition to their final canvas: a premium, heavy-duty, gold-bordered board paper known as a shikishi. With focused minds, guests execute their final, beautiful character onto this permanent keepsake.

What is Included: This base rate is completely all-inclusive of exclusive private venue use, professional bilingual instruction, full rental of all necessary desks and tools, 5 sheets of specialized practice paper, the premium gold-bordered shikishi final board, the protective transport sleeve, and the traditional red seal ink application.
Corporate Payment Terms: For individual travelers or small groups, we accept all major international credit cards on-site or via secure pre-payment links. For registered DMCs, travel agencies, and corporate clients booking well in advance, we fully support corporate accounting pipelines by issuing formal PDF invoices for payment via secure wire transfer (bank transfer).

Transportation for Groups
For groups arriving by taxi or chartered transportation, please let us know in advance if you have specific drop-off or pick-up requirements.
Tour buses can stop briefly in front of the venue for guest drop-off and pick-up. The bus can stop for a few minutes while guests get off, but long-term parking or waiting is not available.
For groups arriving by tour bus, we recommend coordinating the drop-off time with us in advance to ensure a smooth arrival.

Clothing Recommendations
traditional Japanese calligraphy ink (sumi) is made from natural soot and can permanently stain fine fabrics if direct contact occurs. We strongly recommend that organizers advise their guests to wear darker colors or casual clothing for this specific activity day, and to avoid wearing extremely valuable or solid white garments.
