How Many People We Can Host
Yorimichiya welcomes groups of all sizes for a Kyoto tea ceremony experience, from families and small groups to corporate groups, school trips, and larger travel groups.
We can accommodate up to 30 guests at one time. Our traditional Kyoto machiya has two spacious Japanese-style rooms, allowing larger groups to be divided into two groups of up to 15 guests, with one group on the first floor and the other on the second floor.
For groups of more than 30 guests, we can arrange a rotating schedule. While one group enjoys the Kyoto tea ceremony, the other group can take part in another Japanese cultural experience available at Yorimichiya before switching. This allows us to create a comfortable and engaging itinerary even for large groups.
We can also adjust the schedule and activities according to your group's size, purpose, and itinerary. Whether you are planning a corporate team-building activity, school trip, MICE program, or cultural experience for a travel group, please contact us to discuss the best arrangement.
Of course, families and smaller groups of 15 guests or fewer are also welcome. Whatever the size of your group, we are happy to help you enjoy an authentic Japanese tea ceremony in Kyoto.
The Room and Seating
The experience takes place in a traditional Japanese tatami room,
where guests gather around the tea instructor in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Each guest is provided with their own Bonryaku Temae tea set, allowing everyone to follow along with the instructor, learn about Japanese tea culture, and experience preparing and tasting matcha together.
Rather than simply watching a tea ceremony, guests can participate at their own pace and enjoy the experience together as a group. Our tea instructor will guide you through each step and introduce the basics of matcha and Japanese tea culture in an easy-to-understand way.
Guests normally sit on zabuton cushions on the tatami floor. Chairs are also available upon request for guests who prefer not to sit on the floor. Please let us know in advance so we can arrange the seating comfortably for your group.
If Your Group Is Larger Than 15
For groups of more than 15 guests, we can arrange the Kyoto tea ceremony across our two traditional Japanese rooms, with guests divided between the first and second floors. This allows larger groups to enjoy the tea ceremony at the same time in separate rooms.
For groups of more than 15 guests, the tea rooms must be booked exclusively for your group. Therefore, please contact us before making your reservation so we can confirm availability and arrange the rooms and schedule according to your group size.

Choose your Haori and dress up
for the tea ceremony
The tea ceremony experience takes approximately 1 hour, including an choosing your Haori (Kimono jackets), introduction to Japanese tea culture,
a demonstration by our instructor, and time to enjoy matcha and Japanese sweets.
For larger groups, the schedule can be adjusted depending on the number of guests and room arrangement. We will discuss the best format with you when making your group reservation.
Guided in English by a Local Instructor
The experience is guided in English by a local instructor, so international guests can comfortably follow the ceremony and understand the meaning behind each step.
Rather than simply watching a performance, guests are introduced to the customs, etiquette, and spirit of Japanese tea ceremony in an easy-to-understand way.
Everyone Can Make Their Own Matcha
Eeach guest can have the opportunity to prepare their own bowl of matcha under the guidance of our instructor.

Photography During the Tea Ceremony
Guests are welcome to take photos during the tea ceremony. We encourage groups to capture special moments of their experience, including preparing matcha and enjoying the traditional Kyoto machiya setting.
For larger groups, our staff may provide simple guidance on when and where to take photos so that photography does not interrupt the flow of the tea ceremony or other guests.
For corporate groups, school trips, and MICE programs, please let us know in advance if you have any specific photography requirements.

A single tea ceremony session can accommodate up to 30 guests. For groups of more than 30 guests, the experience will be arranged in two or more sessions. Depending on the group itinerary, guests waiting for their tea ceremony can enjoy another Japanese cultural experience, such as Japanese calligraphy, Dharuma painting before switching.

Transportation for Groups
For groups arriving by taxi or chartered transportation, please let us know in advance if you have specific drop-off or pick-up requirements.
Tour buses can stop briefly in front of the venue for guest drop-off and pick-up. The bus can stop for a few minutes while guests get off, but long-term parking or waiting is not available.
For groups arriving by tour bus, we recommend coordinating the drop-off time with us in advance to ensure a smooth arrival.
